Pearson powers to another hurdles win

World champion Sally Pearson showed her London Olympic campaign is well and truly on track with an impressive win in the 100m hurdles final at the Sydney Track Classic on Saturday night.

Pearson improved on her time at last week’s Perth meet, clocking 12.66 seconds to storm to victory, despite knocking over the final hurdle at Sydney Olympic Park.

The 25-year-old clocked 12.86 in Perth after clipping the sixth hurdle and while she admitted she needed to clean up her racing, she was pleased with only her second hit-out since crashing out in the Diamond League final in Brussels last September.

“I’ve got to stop hitting hurdles,” Pearson said after the race.

“I’m running really well and there’s always that one hurdle in the race, I’m glad it was the last one.

“I’m glad to get to the finish line tonight.”

Pearson’s time was quicker than any of her domestic racing last year, showing her campaign to improve upon her Olympic silver medal in Beijing is on course.

“12.66 isn’t bad, I (only) ran those times in Europe (last year), so I’m in good shape,” she said.

“It (hitting the hurdle) was one of those things.

“It’s only my second race of the season, I’ve got about 15 more to go including the heats and final at the Olympics.”

Pearson finished well ahead of American Nia Ali (13.37) and New Zealand’s Andrea Miller (13.46) to record her 21st win in 23 races.

She was also to contest the 200m final later on Saturday night.
