Birmingham on brink of Olympic berth

Victoria’s Collis Birmingham is one step away from booking his plane ticket to London after running another Olympic qualifying time in winning the 5000m at the Briggs Athletics Classic in Hobart on Saturday night.

The 27-year-old crossed the line in 13min 15.57sec, a meet and Tasmanian all-comers record, to beat home NSW’s Ben St Lawrence by nine seconds and Great Britain’s Nick McCormick.

Birmingham now only needs to claim victory at the Melbourne Track Classic in four weeks to automatically secure his nomination for Olympic selection.

“It’s my second qualifier so a good performance in Melbourne and a win should see me headed to London hopefully,” said Birmingham, who broke away with five laps to go to win by more than 50 metres.

“I’ve come from really strong training base and the work I have been doing off the track is starting to pay off. (Training at) Falls Creek was tough but I was sensible about how I went about it and this time shows that the method was right up there.”

The Australian domestic season moves west next weekend for the Perth Track Classic, with reigning 100m hurdles world champion Sally Pearson, 2009 world discus champion Dani Samuels and returning 400m star John Steffensen all confirmed starters.
