Wolves keep Super League pressure on Wigan

Fullback Brett Hodgson recorded 10 points as Warrington’s pursuit of Wigan at the top of the Super League refused to slow following a 22-12 win over St Helens on Monday.

The Wolves faced St Helens on a three-game winning streak and that became four from four due largely to Hodgson’s efforts.

He opened the scoring after two minutes and then kicked three goals after a Chris Hill try six minutes later and Trent Waterhouse and Chris Riley followed suit after the break.

The margin between Wigan and Warrington at the top of the table is just three points but that could be narrowed or extended on Saturday as the two teams face off at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

On Sunday, Huddersfield Giants bounced back to winning ways with a 36-18 victory over Catalan Dragons.

Former New Zealand second-rower David Fa’alogo crossed in the second half for the Giants, who claimed their first win in six matches to keep their hopes of reaching the playoffs alive.

Australian-born Damien Blanch and centre Daryl Millard scored for the Dragons while Exiles halfback Scott Dureau kicked three goals but the Giants remained fourth on the table.

Elsewhere, financially-stricken Bradford Bulls lifted some of the gloom with a 38-26 dismissal of Widnes Vikings.

Despite being deducted six points by the RFL before their clash on Sunday, halfback Brett Kearney, five-eighth Ben Jeffries and Heath L’Estrange all crossed for the Bulls.

Former Bradford winger Patrick Ah Van grabbed 10 points for Widnes while fullback Rhys Hanbury claimed eight but it was in vain for the Super League strugglers.

Just above Bradford on the Super League table are Hull KR who were downed 25-24 by Leeds Rhinos in the dying seconds.

Halfback Michael Dobson crossed to give the Robins an 18-6 lead before a scintillating fightback from the visitors – topped by Kevin Sinfield’s late field goal – stole the points.

Also claiming a valuable two points were Wakefield Trinity Wildcats who maintained slim playoff hopes with a 40-12 triumph against Castleford Tigers.

Tim Smith and Dean Collis were among the try-scorers for the 10th-placed Wildcats.

On Saturday, London Broncos staged the biggest comeback in regular-season Super League history to see off Salford City Reds 40-28.

Tony Rea’s side had trailed 28-6 but the Broncos replied with an unanswered 34-point spell.

Among the scorers were former Australian international Craig Gower, Luke Dorn and Chris Bailey.

On Friday, Wigan Warriors maintained their imperious form at the summit of the table with a 48-10 demolition of Hull FC.
