Tigers putting Galloway through his paces

Wests Tigers prop Keith Galloway will be put through his paces for the final time at Allianz Stadium on Thursday to prove to coach Tim Sheens he will be fit enough to face Brisbane on Friday.

The NSW and Test front-rower was named in the Tigers team to face the in-form Broncos on Tuesday after missing the last four matches with a foot injury sustained in the NRL season opener against Cronulla.

The Tigers have lost every game in Galloway’s absence and Sheens admits his return in addition to skipper Robbie Farah after a two-match ban will be a much-needed boost to his struggling side.

“Keith has a fitness test this morning and we have to clear him, but so far he has done everything that we’ve asked of him,” Sheens said on Thursday.

“It is good to have your best players available, I think we need that, especially the younger ones.

“They need to have the senior players around them to get them through the tough times on the field when things aren’t going so well.”

Although Farah and Galloway are available, the Tigers will be without key back-rower Gareth Ellis, who is sidelined for three months with a fractured foot.

Although Sheens conceded the loss of the England international is a blow, he backed Liam Fulton to prove he’s an adequate replacement.

“It was a similar thing last year where Gareth had an ankle injury and we let him go home for a few weeks,” Sheens said.

“Liam stepped in last year for him and did well and will do the same again in that right-side second-row role.”

Sheens also quashed any notion of former NSW prop Willie Mason joining the club.

Mason was widely expected to join at the end of last month, after meeting with Tigers officials, but the veteran coach denied he was ever going to sign.

“The Willie Mason thing is dead and buried,” he said.

“I made that comment here a few weeks ago and it’s long gone.”
