Sea Eagles braced for Origin duty: Barrett

Manly coach Trent Barrett says the Sea Eagles must maintain their winning momentum in Saturday night’s NRL clash with Brisbane as they brace for State of Origin duty.

Barrett hopes the sixth-placed Sea Eagles can nab a third-straight win to boost a Manly outfit he believes may provide up to six players to NSW and Queensland.

“The next two weeks are really important for our players – we have a couple vying for Queensland and probably three or four putting their hand up for NSW,” Barrett said.

Manly half Daly Cherry-Evans is in line to replace Johnathan Thurston if the Maroons five-eighth does not overcome a shoulder injury ahead of the May 31 Origin opener.

And siblings, fullback Tom and forward Jake Trbojevic, are firmly in the NSW selectors’ sights.

But Barrett hoped Origin was not on their minds as they looked to end top-four outfit Brisbane’s four-game winning run in the crunch clash, part of the NRL’s Suncorp Stadium double header.

“I certainly don’t want that at the forefront of our individuals’ minds,” he said.

Cherry-Evans played the last of his six Origins in 2015 but Barrett believed the playmaker was ready to don the maroon again.

“He is one of the form halves of the competition this year,” Barrett said.

“He is leading the competition in try assists, he’s in a really good space at the moment.

“It’s a big game for him but he does rely on what is going on around him.”

Barrett had no concerns with fullback Trbojevic getting caught up in Origin hype.

“Nothing much really worries Tommy. He’s taken it all in his stride thus far,” he said.

“We haven’t seen anything to worry about.

“He is a confident kid and playing well.”
