Penrith move one step closer to top eight

Matt Moylan’s hamstring remains a serious concern for Penrith as they edged one step closer to the NRL’s top eight with a 24-16 win over Gold Coast.

Moylan was clearly hampered throughout the see-sawing contest, and he was taken from the field with 15 minutes to play after he scored a 40-metre intercept try.

It’s understood there was no tear, however it will be a worry for Panthers coach Anthony Griffin given the 26-year-old missed last week’s defeat of the Warriors with the same injury.

The win moved Panthers to level on wins with the eighth-placed St George Illawarra, who have a game in hand with a superior for-and-against.

Penrith also have games against the lowly ranked Canterbury and Wests Tigers in the next fortnight, before a more difficult run home.

Meanwhile, the result means the Titans’ finals hopes now seem even more improbable as they are likely to need five wins from their final six games.

They could also be forced to do it without powerful centre Konrad Hurrell, who was taken from the field after 10 minutes with a serious hamstring injury.

After the Titans led 6-0 early, the Panthers were far too frantic and coughed up the ball six times while in attack in the Gold Coast’s half.

But the match swung on an error from Tyrone Roberts as he drifted across field and was hit by Panthers forward Corey Harawira-Naera in the 36th minute.

Waqa Blake scooped the ball up to score his first of two tries, before a Nathan Cleary penalty goal gave the Panthers an 8-6 lead in the second half.

The two teams traded tries through Blake and Anthony Don in a tense 20-minute period, before Moylan’s intercept put the Panthers back in control.

Dallin Watene-Zelezniak then capitalised on a bullet-like cut-out pass from Cleary to put the game beyond doubt, before Roberts crossed for a late Titans try.
