Maloney to push World Cup case against PNG

James Maloney will get one last chance to press his Rugby League World Cup claims after being named at halfback for the Prime Minister’s XIII to take on Papua New Guinea.

Australian coach Mal Meninga has vowed to use the September 24 match as a World Cup trial, naming 11 players with Kangaroos experience in his 19-man squad.

The 31-year-old Maloney will partner Brisbane-bound Cronulla teammate Jack Bird in the halves.

Only players already out of the finals series were considered for the clash, giving Maloney one last chance to impress, while his chief rivals Cameron Munster and Michael Morgan battled it out for their clubs.

Maloney was picked in the Kangaroos’ Origin merit team squad, selected by Meninga at the end of the series. His performances, however, have paled in comparison to those of Munster and Morgan over the final months of the NRL season.

Meninga has also shown his faith in St George Illawarra star Josh Dugan, despite the fallout from his NSW State of Origin pub visit with Blake Ferguson.

Dugan has been named in the centres alongside Manly’s Tom Trbojevic, who will play in the team for the second-straight year.

James Tedesco will also push his World Cup case at fullback, while Dane Gagai will stake his claim after a man-of-the-series Origin performance on the wing.

The NSW Origin front-row pairing of Aaron Woods and Andrew Fifita will reunite in the starting line-up. Woods will captain the PM’s XIII.

Canberra prop Josh Papalii has also been selected after missing the Kangaroos’ Test against New Zealand in May after a drink-driving conviction.

PM’S XIII: James Tedesco, Dane Gagai, Josh Dugan, Tom Trbojevic, Valentine Holmes, Jack Bird, James Maloney, Aaron Woods (capt), Api Koroisau, Andrew Fifita, Tyson Frizell, Josh Papalii, Jake Trbojevic, Wade Graham, David Klemmer, Dylan Walker, Josh Jackson, Paul Vaughan.
