Lillyman injured in Warriors’ trial win

Prop Jacob Lillyman looks set to miss the start of the NRL season after suffering an arm injury in the Warriors’ trial match against Gold Coast in Auckland.

The Queensland Origin representative went off early in the Warriors’ 26-10 victory at North Harbour Stadium on Saturday.

Coach Brian McClennan says the club will release a medical report when further details about the extent of the problem are known.

“It’s not looking good,” he said.

“He’s going to be missing some games.”

McClennan, in his first match as coach since taking over from Ivan Cleary, saw his side run in five tries to two.

He said a major positive from the trial was being able to give 25 players, including some in the club’s under-20s squad, a run.

The Titans were quick out of the blocks and scored on their first possession, winger Joe Vickery climbing above the defence to pull in a Beau Henry kick and dot down.

The Warriors responded with tries to winger Konrad Hurrell, Lewis Brown and Glen Fisiiahi to be up 20-6 at halftime.

In the third quarter, both McClennan and Gold Coast counterpart John Cartwright made use of their expanded benches.

Titans utility Jamie Dowling closed the margin with a try, but the Warriors had the final say when winger Bill Tupou produced his side’s third long-range solo effort.

Despite the scoreline, Cartwright was pleased with the way the Titans, missing several frontline players who were either involved in the All Stars match or recovering from injury, were able to compete physically against the Warriors.

He believed the difference between the two teams was in the kicking game, with Warriors five-eighth James Maloney able to force several line drop-outs.

“We came up with none, and they scored three runaway tries off the back of our poor kicks,” Cartwright said.

“I was very impressed with the forwards. The backs didn’t get many opportunities.”

Among those not in Auckland was the Titans’ expected first-choice halves pairing of skipper Scott Prince and William Zillman.

“We had eight guys at home and they will come back next week,” Cartwright said.

The Titans’ next trial game is next Saturday against Brisbane on the Gold Coast, while the Warriors will be in action the same day against South Sydney at Coffs Harbour.
