Injury could end Galuvao’s NRL career

The career of two-time premiership winner Joe Galuvao could be over after he suffered a suspected snapped Achilles in Manly’s win over Cronulla at Brookvale Oval on Sunday.

Galuvao was taken off on a stretcher after an innocuous looking tackle from Sharks back-rower Anthony Tupou in the 50th minute.

The 34-year-old Galuvao, who enjoyed premiership success at Penrith and Manly, is only contracted with the Sea Eagles until the end of this year.

Manly coach Geoff Toovey said early medical reports indicated the Achilles injury would end Galuvao’s 2013 campaign.

“I’m not certain yet but it looks like maybe his Achilles … if so it will be the end of his season,” Toovey said.

“It is really disappointing for us and for Joe. We are hoping it comes good but the medical staff think he may be gone for the season.”

Galuvao began his 16-year career with the Warriors in 1998 and the former New Zealand representative back-rower has played 234 first grade games for the Warriors, Penrith, South Sydney, Parramatta and Manly.

Toovey said he wouldn’t be drawn on whether the injury would spell the end of Galuvao’s career.

“I don’t want to speculate on that,” he said.

“That would be something for Joe to decide if and when. But if it is his Achilles they (medical staff) are saying it would definitely be the end of his year.”
