NSW skipper Paul Gallen wants to be running on the weekend before the State Of Origin decider, saying it wouldn’t be fair on the rest of the team to go into the game without testing his injured foot.
Gallen tore a ligament in his foot in last Wednesday night’s Origin II and was still sporting a moon boot at a Cronulla fan day on Wednesday.
He expects to keep the boot on for another week but said he hoped to take part in the Blues training session on the following Sunday.
“I don’t think it would be fair on the team (not to train before the game),” Gallen said.
“I’d like to have a run before the game to make sure I’m right.
“I’m sure he’ll (NSW coach Laurie Daley) give me as much time as I need.”
Gallen said there was no chance he would declare himself unavailable before Sunday’s naming of the squad, with NSW just one win away from winning the Origin series for the first time since 2005.
After the initial scare, Gallen said the injury had been progressing well, but said a needle before the game was not an option.
“I don’t think so with that sort of area because it would numb my whole foot – we’ve seen blokes who get their foot numb before.
“They told me from the start it would be three weeks.
“It was three weeks until the next Origin game. I generally heal faster than most … I’d like to think whatever they say I can take a week off it.”
Gallen isn’t the Blues’ only injury concern with game one fullback Jarryd Hayne still struggling to overcome a hamstring strain.
