Frizell has Milford in sights in Origin I

NSW forward Tyson Frizell has hinted he will target Queensland debutant Anthony Milford in Wednesday night’s State of Origin opener.

Frizell has been named at lock and was expected to play in the middle but the St George Illawarra star could be shifted to the right edge to exploit any deficiencies in the inexperienced Milford’s game.

“I might find my way out there during the game,” Frizell said.

“But at the moment I’m concentrating on powering through the middle and if I do find my way out onto the edge I’ll be targeting any half.”

Frizell is considered one of the most powerful runners in the game while there are question marks over Milford’s defence.

This year the Broncos rookie half has missed more than one in five tackles he has attempted.

He has made 115 tackles but missed 31 – the 13th most in the NRL, according to Fox Sports Stats.

Canberra enforcer Josh Papalii and Melbourne centre Will Chambers are set to be Milford’s bodyguards on the Queensland left edge.

While Frizell described Milford as “no slouch and a pretty handy defender”, he said it would be his job to sap his energy to dent his effectiveness in attack.

“It’s a part of a back-rower’s game,” Frizell said.

“You want to be targeting that edge and you want to be making as many yards as possible.

“Whoever’s on that edge, I’ll be doing my best to get through them.”

Asked if Frizell would be honing in on Milford, NSW prop Andrew Fifita said: “I hope so to be honest, if he’s running those lead lines.

“And if I was a back-rower I’d be trying to get there rather than at Papalii.”
