Understandably after such a lean season, some of Parramatta’s young players struggle with the words of the club’s team song.

But after massive upsets of heavyweights Melbourne and Brisbane in successive weeks, they are not only learning the words of their victory song, but also remembering how to win.

“We’ll saviour it, don’t worry. We’ll take the good bits out of it but it’s just one game,” said retiring skipper Nathan Hindmarsh after caretaker coach Brad Arthur enjoyed a dream NRL debut with a 42-22 win in Brisbane.

“We got to do it again next week and, I know that sounds really boring and you’re not going to write about it, but we got the Tigers next Monday night and we’ve got to do it again and do it for the rest of the year.”

After what’s been a horror season for Parramatta fans there is suddenly light at the end of the tunnel.

Several prospects showed their wares, including pacey fullback Jake Mullaney and centre Ryan Morgan.

The real delight was the return to his free-flowing game of expensive halfback purchase Chris Sandow who scored two great tries.

The Eels delivered on Arthur’s promise to break the shackles and play with some flair but, as Hindmarsh pointed out, the win was built on their committed defence.

“Our defence frustrated them when they had the footy and that’s what we did to Melbourne last week,” said Arthur.

“I said to the boys and Hindy as well I wanted us to play a bit of footy.

“But it if you’re going to make errors, you’ve got to be able to defend them.

“If we’re going to turn up in defence for each other then we’ll keep playing that way.”

Arthur paid tribute to former coach Stephen Kearney.

“I spoke to him on Sunday and his was the first text message I got after the game.

“It shows you the type of person he is and a lot of what we did tonight was built off the back of what he has built here.”

The victory, which moves them to within two points of Penrith, gives the Eels and Hindmarsh the chance to avoid the wooden spoon in his final season with the club.

“It hasn’t been spoken about unless it’s asked by one of you guys,” said Hindmarsh.

“We’ve come to the conclusion if we get it, we get and who cares really.

“As long as we’re going out there every week and playing our best and working hard for each other we’ll cop whatever at the end of the year.”
