Dolphins vs Manly Sea Eagles Preview

The Dolphins have emerged as a genuine finals contender after winning five of their last seven games, setting up an intriguing Suncorp Stadium showdown with a Manly side that was travelling very nicely until a Round 9 collapse.

Bookending a disappointing loss in Brisbane to depleted Newcastle with a 44-16 demolition of Parramatta in Darwin and a gutsy eclipse of North Queensland in Townsville over the past three weeks, the Dolphins have arrived.

Kodi Nikorima has been a superb foil for booming halfback Isaiya Katoa and had his hands and boot all over the Dolphins’ five tries against the Cowboys. Meanwhile, lock Max Plath typifies their gritty effort on both sides of the ball.

The Sea Eagles were on a four-match unbeaten streak and powering towards another win at 20-0 up at home to Canberra but unravelled spectacularly to lose 26-24. It was far from disastrous in terms of their overall formline and where they sit on the ladder…but it was two points gone begging.

Herbie Farnworth is a huge in for the Dolphins, particularly with Tesi Niu ruled out. Kenny Bromwich also returns from concussion.

Ben Trbojevic returns in time to replace Nathan Brown (hip) in the Manly 17. Karl Lawton starts at hooker for a concussed Lachlan Croker, with Gordon Chan Kum Tong joining the bench.

The Dolphins’ only match against Manly to date was a forgettable, crushed 58-18 at Brookvale in Round 15 last year with Reuben Garrick getting a hat-trick, and Tolu Koula, Jason Saab and Tom Trbojevic notching doubles.

The Sea Eagles are slight favourites here as they search for just their second win in their last six visits to Suncorp Stadium. The Dolphins are 5-7 at the venue.

Manly’s best – with the Trbojevics and DCE setting the tone – will be good enough, but the suspended Haumole Olakau’atu’s absence has taken some sting out of the pack. The Dolphins look the value option as an underdog in what should be an absorbing contest.
