Copley trusts Titans board in coach search

Happy to stay out of the process to select the club’s new coach, Gold Coast centre Dale Copley says his teammates have no choice but to back the under siege Titans administration.

Former players, coaches and staff have called for more football experience on the Titans board this week, following the Monday sacking of coach Neil Henry.

But the former Brisbane flyer said he backed the club to select the coach the team needs, despite many of the players publicly supporting Henry to remain in the gig.

“We kind of have to have faith in the board; we don’t get a decision and nor should we,” Copley said.

“They are appointed to make the best decision and they hold the best interests of the club at the forefront.

“Whether we disagree or agree it doesn’t matter, we don’t have a choice, just have to roll with what they decide and trust they’ll make the best decision.”

Club CEO Graham Annesley will chair a meeting on Friday to decide on a coaching selection panel, with a number of candidates being touted for the role.

Ipswich Jets pair Ben and Shane Walker have expressed their interest, while Mal Meninga, Kevin Walters, Tim Sheens, Adrian Lam and current assistant Craig Hodges have all been put forward as options to join the club in various roles.

A final decision on the coach is not expected until November, around the same time the NRL-owned club is due to be sold.

The Titans are in the midst of a horror five-game losing streak ahead of their final home game against Canterbury on Saturday.

Copley is keen to return to the field and escape the negativity.

“As a young kid you dream of playing one NRL game, so no, would never wish a season away,” he said.

“Sitting 14th is not good enough and that’s why the club’s in position we’re in, in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.”

Asked whether the players felt responsible for Henry’s sacking, Copley replied: “I guess you always feel guilt when you’re not performing, but I’m not sure that extends to costing the coach his job.”
