Canterbury Bulldogs vs South Sydney Rabbitohs 2014 NRL Round 25 preview, tips and teams

The Bulldogs consolidated their win over the Eels in round 23 with a comfortable 30 – 10 win over the struggling West Tigers last week.

As they did against the Eels, the Bulldogs started well and dominated the early stages of the game, scoring four tries inside of the first thirty minutes and taking 24 – nil lead into the break.

For the remaining 50 minutes however, the Dogs only crossed once as they ventured away from the structure that worked for them earlier in the game.

They’ll have to stick their strengths this week though of sustained pressure and patience, and take a leaf out of the Cowboys’ kicking game-plan last week, as they face a hurting South Sydney side coming off an unexpected loss.

The Bulldogs sit sixth on the ladder, one win in front of both the Cowboys and Eels. With these two sides starting favourites against the Sharks and Newcastle respectively, the Bulldogs need a win here or they could find themselves potentially outside of the eight and in danger of missing the finals.

Des Hasler has named the same squad as last week.

RABBITOHS
Coming off five straight wins, all by a 13+ margin, the Rabbitohs were again short-priced favourites when the stepped out against the Cowboys, who were backing up from a Monday night loss to Penrith, at ANZ Stadium last week.

However for the fifth time this year at ANZ stadium, where their record reads a surprisingly poor 4 – 6, the Rabbitohs let punters down and were defeated 22 – 10.

The Rabbitohs, who could’ve gone to the top of the ladder with a win, found it hard to build any momentum as the Cowboys, led by Johnathan Thurston’s kicking game, kept the Rabbitohs on the back-foot and to their equal lowest score of the year.

The Rabbitohs have only lost two in a row once since round 5 this year and with the Roosters their final game of the year at Allianz Stadium, the Rabbitohs need to bounce back with a good performance here.

Despite leaving the field last week, halfback Adam Reynolds has been named at halfback with George Burgess, who returns from suspension, coming in at prop and forcing brother Luke to the bench.

HEAD TO HEAD
The Bulldogs toughed out a 15 – 14 win when these two sides last met in round 7 this year, a time where both were in solid winning form.

It continued a recent trend of tight finishes with no more than eight points separating the two teams in four of the past five matches, of which the Rabbitohs lead 3 – 2.

The Rabbitohs haven’t been trustworthy at home this year and the current quote can look a bit skinny when taking that factor into account however, last week should serve as a good wake-up call and their Coach Michael Maguire, is giving them a chance to redeem themselves by naming virtually the same side.
