Cameron Smith’s mum Sonia has given him her blessing to play out his NRL career in Melbourne rather than return home to Brisbane.
Mrs Smith says she thinks the Australian skipper is a one-club player and will resist the lure of a $1.4 million-a-year deal to play with the Broncos from 2015.
The 30-year-old Test hooker has spoken of concerns he and wife Barbara have about raising their three young kids in Melbourne away from their extended Brisbane families.
“My personal feelings for Cam are that I’d like to see him play with the Storm until he retires,” Mrs Smith told her local Quest paper.
“I’d love for him to come home tomorrow but as much as I miss him I think he is the type of boy who will stay with the club he started with.
“My feeling is that he will play out his career with the Storm.”
Smith arrived back in Australia on Wednesday after leading the Kangaroos to their World Cup triumph and will have more than a month’s break before returning to training.
Storm coach Craig Bellamy said this week he’s eager for a decision to be made on his captain’s future as soon as possible.
But Smith said he was in rush to make such an important decision and will take all the time he needs.
