Wilson shows class in new training venture

Former Inverell trainer Marcus Wilson is yet to decide if Attica will back up at Doomben on Saturday.

Wilson, 25, has decided to make Queensland his new home following a successful month’s trial based at Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast.

His move was prompted by long hours travelling and a frustration with a series of washed-out race meetings in the northwest region of NSW.

“The closest two tracks to Inverell are Tamworth and Grafton which are about a three-hour drive away,” Wilson said.

“Two other tracks, Moree and Gunnedah, are a bit closer but they only race about half a dozen times a year.

“A lot of meetings get washed out back home which was part of my decision to move.

“The tracks up here seem to cop the rain better than at home.

“Since I moved to Caloundra we’ve had a lot of rain and I’ve already been called a rainmaker on a few occasions but it doesn’t bother me.”

Wilson has an imposing record with the small team of 12 horses he brought north after closing his Inverell stable last month.

From 22 starters, he has had six wins and eight placings.

“I’ve always wanted to further my career which is another reason for moving here and it looks like I’ll be staying on the course at Caloundra,” Wilson said.

“I’m looking at a few other options and have put a few feelers out at the Gold Coast and Deagon but Caloundra is a good place to train with the synthetic track.

“The benchmark system in NSW was another reason why I looked at getting out.

“I don’t like the benchmark races back home. There weren’t enough races left to suit my horses.”

Wilson landed his first Brisbane metropolitan win when Albert’s Choice was successful at Doomben on February 22.

He has a Sydney metropolitan win with Carrizo Creek who won on the Kensington track at Randwick in 2009.

Wilson only began training five years ago after serving a long apprenticeship working for his father, trainer John Wilson.

“I started off with one horse and it’s grown from there,” he said.

“Dad was my mentor but I never got many horses from him.

“Dad no longer trains but he still works as a chiropractor and I’ve also worked for a few years with John Messara.”

Attica, who is entered in the Brisbane Screenprinting and Displays Open Handicap (2000m), finished a game third to Marked over 2200 metres at Eagle Farm last Saturday.

“I’m not sure if I’m going to start him yet and I’ll decide later,” Wilson said.

“The back up has me a little worried.”
