William Reid Stakes 2012 night tips, preview and selections

The biggest night in Australian racing takes place on Friday evening for William Reid Stakes Night at Moonee Valley. The $400,000 Group One Power Tracker William Reid Stakes (1200m) is the feature race, with the worlds best second sprinter in Hay List looking perfectly placed to record another major scalp after showing superb grit and courage to win the Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington.

The three-year-old fillies, who are on the Oaks trail, will contest the $200,000 Group Two Sportingbet Fillies Classic (1600m). It promises to be a cracking race with a majority of the ladies in form and ready to fire again.

The $200,000 Group Two Sportingbet Sunline Stakes (1600m) is another event that is expected to be a beauty with some fine mares stepping out to win the race named in honour of one of the best mares the world will see.

Race One: Rotary End Polio Handicap 1600m

Back Me: Supreme Warrior found the front last start and had no peace. He stuck on well for third and with an easier lead here, he can win again.
Don’t Back Me: Fast And Free won last start, but he was getting a tad tired on the post and does rise 2kg here. Looks to be a risk.
Big Danger: Chieftain Jack had to win at Bendigo last start and did it well. Now that he has won, he can go on with it.
Roughie: Now You Know went along at a very strong tempo and held on ok for fourth. Can be in the finish with a softer run.

Race Two: Ascend Sales Trophies Final 3000m

Back Me: Giving Rowland another chance. He sat back last Saturday and only going very late so I suspect that the 3000m here will suit him perfectly. Does drop 6kg and Olly sticks.
Don’t Back Me: Big drop in grade for Saddler’s Story, but he was terrible in the Adelaide Cup. How he can improve enough to win here is anybodys guess, but not for me.
Big Danger: Our Serena nearly pinched the Bart Cummings in front and was only beaten by a superb ride from Olly on Drunken Sailor. On the limit here and she should again prove hard to beat.
Roughie: Aiglon pulled very hard on the speed last start yet held on well to win. With better manners and Williams jumping on top, he is a key contender.

Race Three: Hacer Group Premium Plate 1200m

Back Me: A sit and steer job for Froggy here again on Sir Fernando. Led, left alone and sprinted clear to win over this track/distance last start. Should do it again.
Don’t Back Me: Wouldn’t touch Metonymy because the Moody camp has been on a dry run in recent times.
Big Danger: Sharnee Rose is the best maiden galloper in Australia. Very good fresh run at Flemington, has performed well second up in the past and has drawn perfectly.
Roughie: Cash Bound got back and never got in to the race at Morphettville when resuming. Fitter, drops in weight and does have a touch of class.

Race Four: Essendon Mazda 55 Second Challenge Open Handicap 955m

Back Me: Pretty keen on General Truce. Excellent when fresh and at the Valley. Does have class and with the claim for Ben Knobel, he only has to carry 53.5kg. He appears to be the best weighted horse of the year!
Don’t Back Me: Queen Delight does have very good pace and this race would suit if it wasn’t for the other speedsters engaged here.
Big Danger: Far Horizons got home well in a good race under lights at Cranbourne. Drops in grade and drawn nicely.
Roughie: Waltzes missed the kick, but really motored home behind Kulgrinda at this track/distance. Maybe sitting off the speed is the key to this horse.

Race Five: Sportingbet Fillies Classic 1600m

Back Me: Big fan of Total Attraction and I think she can win here. Was resuming from a seven week break when she went to Flemington and after briefly looking to be a winning chance, she faded late for fourth. Got that run under her belt, Bossy rides, drawn ok…very hard to beat.
Don’t Back Me: Empress Rock won well in the same race mentioned above, but this time she has drawn wide and meets a couple of nice ones here.
Big Danger: Our Miss Jones was a good thing beaten in the Typhoon Tracy. Given time to get over that, steps up to 1600m and has plenty of upside in her favour.
Roughie: Outdoor should rellish the mile here given her mother is multiple Group One winner Serenade Rose. Her run last start was good enough for her to be warranted an outside chance.

Race Six: Power Tracker William Reid Stakes 1200m

Back Me: At WFA, Hay List is a special. Brilliant effort down the straight last start and he meets these so much better at the weights.
Don’t Back Me: Foxwedge was solid enough in the same race as Hay List, but he hasn’t raced around Moonee Valley and he meets Hay List a lot more worse at the weights.
Big Danger: Woorim has the best final 200m of any horse in Australia, perhaps the world. If he is within four to five lengths of Hay List at the 400m, he can go very close.
Roughie: Rekindled Interest flies fresh and at this track. Look for him to be charging late.

Race Seven: Sportingbet Sunline Stakes 1600m

Back Me: Very hard race because there is about six or seven winning chances. Going with Marveen. Was going to win but got beat right on the peg by Spirit Song. Has the barrier draw over that horse here and she should get the beautiful run.
Don’t Back Me: Spirit Song is flying at present, but the wide barrier just about seals her fate.
Big Danger: Raspberries isn’t a noted first up performer, but she toyed with her rivals at Flemington. She’ll only improve on that, handles Moonee Valley well and does have a touch of class.
Roughie: Not sure she’ll be rough in betting, but Hi Belle has to go in. Forgive and forget she went around at Flemington given she missed the kick.

Race Eight: Tbv/Newmarket Insurance Handicap 1200m

Back Me: Punters will finish off on top thanks to It’s Crunch Time. Should sit outside Dubawi Gold, control the race there and win. Best bet of the night for me.
Don’t Back Me: Dubwai Gold does have talent, but he doesn’t run a strong 1200m. I don’t think he can win here.
Big Danger: Although his record at this track is poor, I give Del Palio a huge chance given he is in flying form at the moment and has drawn to get the box seat trail.
Roughie: Forget Strike The Tiger went around at Bendigo last Saturday. Got held up, shuffled back and was never tested from the rider. Newitt sticks with him here and with normal luck, he can swoop and be in the finish.
