Tattersall’s Mile Day Day Tips and Bets – Doomben Races 21/7/2018

Black type racing returns to Doomben on Saturday and a smart field will assemble for the Listed Tattersall’s Mile (1600m).

Some of Queensland’s best milers have been confirmed for their shot at the $100,000 prize pool on offer, while a few notable interstate raiders have remained north of the border after the Brisbane Winter Carnival.

Its been a fine week in the greater Brisbane metropolitan region and the track remains in the ‘good’ range. The rail has been set out half a metre around the entire Doomben track.

DES LAMBART MEMORIAL BM80 (2200M)

TIP: No. 6 Mornington (each-way)

A smart field of stayers will step out for the first and there is a case to be made for nearly one horse.

One runner that does appeal at his current price is the Chris Waller-trained Mornington ($6.50). Mornington does not win out of turn, but he has produced a number of strong performances and posted consistent results this time. He’s drawn favourably, weighted top win and will eat up the 2200m at Doomben from a forward position.

FUNCTIONS @ TATTERSALL’S 2YO HANDICAP (1600M)

TIP: No. 3 Miss Quaintly

The field is wide open with thirteen two-year-olds and this is looming as another race with plenty of live chances.

Miss Quaintly ($3.70) has only made two appearances at the races so far, but she has shown above average talent and can go on with the job in this race. The daughter of More Than Ready immediately stamped herself as a filly to follow when she delivered a decent field a comfortable defeat on the Sunshine Coast on June 17th, before finishing second on heavy going over 1350m last time out. The step up in trip looks ideal and she’ll have the added advantage of Jeff Lloyd in the saddle.

TRIPLE M’S RICH UNCLE MAL’S OPEN HANDICAP (1200M)

TIP: No. 1 Amanaat

This field is only small, but is also boasts some of the best horses set to step out at Doomben on Saturday.

Amanaat ($2.40) has not been seen at the races since April, but he is a horse with huge talent and will take plenty of beating. Amanaat has won seven of nine starts since transferring to the care of Ben Currie and was last seen winning the Listed Weetwood Handicap (1200m) with complete ease.

Talented mare Tumbler ($2.40) is yet to find winning form this time, but has finished second in both the Listed Lightning (1000m) and Group 3 Healy Stakes (1200m) most notably and can go one better here.

Niccanova ($5) resumed for a credible sixth in the Rockhampton Newmarket a fortnight ago and probably has the most upside of any of the leading contenders. He is a black type winner and has typically found his best form at Doomben.

LAZY YAK BM75 HANDICAP (1600M)

TIP: No. 7 Cedarwood

Several classy milers will step out in Race 4, but the Chris Waller-trained Cedarwood ($4.60) has steadily built to the task this time and looks extremely well placed. Cedarwood took a couple of runs to blow off the dust this time, but he worked home well to finish third on heavy-going here a fortnight ago and will appreciate a return to a firm track. He can find a good position just behind the pace from barrier 7 and with Glen Colless aboard, will be tough to beat.
BET NOW: DOOMBEN RACE 4

STELLA ARTOIS BM70 HANDICAP (1200M)

TIP: No. 3 Tabbing

A couple of early scratchings have meant that two emergency horses have gained a run in the capacity Race 5 field.

Tabbing ($4.70) is seeking a third-consecutive win and will be extremely difficult to beat again on Saturday. The Your Song gelding does face a rise in class today, but he’s put two fields to the sword so far this time, is drawn well and has plenty of early speed. He can take up the running and will give them something to chase.

CLASS 6 HANDICAP (1350M)

TIP: No. 10 Natch (each-way)

The field of Race 6 is open from a betting perspective and there is a case to be made for more than half the field.

There is plenty of value to be taken but one horse that is worth consideration is the Tony Gollan-trained Natch ($6), who is seeking a third-consecutive race win. This is a step up in class, but Natch is a horse with a good amount of talent and hasn’t missed a place through a total of six starts this time. The 1350m will suit, he’s drawn well and can fight his way into the money once more.

GH MUMM QTIS 3YO PLATE (1200M)

TIP: No. 8 Miss Exfactor (each-way)

Some of Queensland’s biggest stables will saddle three-year-olds in Race 7 and there’s plenty of value to be taken in betting.

Miss Exfactor ($6.50) has found outstanding form this time and looks over the odds at her current price. The daughter of Your Song has posted four wins and as many minors through her eight career starts and overcame less-than favourable conditions to finish third at Doomben last time. A return to good going should play into her favour and she’s drawn to get the run of the race.

WINNING EDGE PRESENTATIONS CLASS 3 PLATE (1350M)

TIP: No. 11 Rhyming (each-way)

A capacity field will step out in the third-to-last race on Tattersall’s Mile Day and it is one of the most open on the card from a betting perspective.

Steve Tregea has a number of great horses currently in work and Rhyming ($13/$4) is a live chance of continue that run of form on Saturday. The Poet’s Voice mare was a strong and consistent performer last time in and resumed this time for a credible third over 1200m at Rockhampton. She’ll take plenty of benefit from that run and has the ability to fight into the finish of this race at odds.

LISTED TATTERSALL’S MILE (1600M)

TIP: No. 1 Religify (each-way)

It’s not often that the feature race is the last of the day but that is the case on Tattersall’s Mile Day and it looms as a great opportunity for punters to take advantage of some value.

Religify ($.950) is a multiple winner of races likes this one and is a live chance at each-way odds once more. The son of Choisir failed to fire first-up, but he is a horse that generally improves with racing and he can fight his way into the finish.

Princess Posh carries winning form into the race and is the $3.30 at the time of publish. The Canford Cliffs mare does face a step up in class and a return to firm going, but she well and truly has the runs on the board and hasn’t missed a place in four starts since May.
