Phil Sweeney and his daughter Brooke head to Sandown on Saturday looking for their first metropolitan win as a trainer-and-jockey combination.

They will make the four-hour trip from Jerilderie for Final Jest to line up in the Robhar Breeding & Racing Plate (1300m).

Phil has tasted city success as a trainer and he also has Cee Cee `N’ Dry, to be ridden by Harry Coffey, engaged in the Doolan’s Heavy Haulage Handicap (1500m).

For Brooke it will be her fourth ride in the metropolitan area and her first at a Saturday city fixture.

But she is no stranger to success with 42 winners around the NSW Riverina and country areas of Victoria.

Final Jest and Brooke also have a special bond, combining twice for two wins in country Cups.

Both Sweeney-trained runners have drawn wide but they will run because there are few suitable races.

“Cee Cee `N’ Dry is probably not a Saturday horse but at Benalla he’s got 61 kilos on Saturday, so it was either go there for a run or to town,” Sweeney said.

“Final Jest’s last two wins have been in country Cup races but he struggled at Moonee Valley in between times.

“Moonee Valley was probably a bit tight for him. He’s just been beaten at Sandown (back in March) and he needs a big track.

“Brooke’s only had two cracks on him and won both of them, but she’s going to need a fair bit of luck from where they have drawn.”

With Brooke already making her way in racing, younger sister Sally is starting out on the journey of race riding.

A winner with her first race ride at Balranald on November 1, Sally notched her second success at Goulburn on Tuesday from just her sixth ride.
