Soul makes winning start for Godolphin

Former Australian sprinter Soul has capped his first start for Godolphin with a strong victory in Dubai on Thursday night.

The gelding by Commands won three of his 12 starts in Australia under the care of Darley Australia head trainer Peter Snowden and proved too good for his rivals at Meydan in the Attijari Points Reward Handicap (1200m) on turf.

Soul, who is now prepared by Saeed Bin Suroor after being transferred to Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin operation, was ridden by champion jockey Frankie Detorri in the 1-1/4-length victory.

“He seems a nice new horse who will be better over 1400 metres I think and a nice type to take to Europe,” Detorri was quoted on the Dubai Racing Club’s website.

Scarf, who also joined Godolphin earlier this year from Australia, was having his second start in Dubai on Thursday night and finished fifth in the CBD World Mastercard Handicap (1400m).

Soul won the Listed Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1300m) at Sandown at his final Australian start last November while his biggest win came in the Group Two Danehill Stakes (1200m) in September 2010.

Snowden is preparing star three-year-olds Helmet and Sepoy to race on Dubai World Cup night on March 31.

The Australian trainer will remain in charge of Sepoy and Helmet for their Dubai assignments where they will race in Godolphin colours for the first time.
