Peter Snowden continued his dominance of the Rosehill program, completing a clean sweep of the three-year-old features when Raging Force stretched his winning run in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes.
The promising gelding’s victory came just two races after stablemate Grand Prairie saluted in the Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes (1300m), handing Snowden a black type double.
Raging Force had built a sequence of three straight wins over the winter and proved he belonged at this level, putting away Golden Slipper runner-up Wodeton by 1-1/2 lengths, with Blue Diamond winner Devil Night finishing back in fifth.
“That was a good test for him today. There was a Slipper placegetter, a Blue Diamond winner and a few other horses there that have shown a fair bit of ability. He beat the A-graders there, they weren’t benchmark horses and he has won well,” Snowden said. “The Run To The Rose is the natural progression we will take with him in a couple of weeks’ time. That will tell us whether he can go seven furlongs or whether we keep him to 1200 metres.”
Tommy Berry, who guided the winner, said Raging Force showed he could relax, an important step if he is to stretch to the 1400m of the Golden Rose. “Full credit to him that he didn’t want to over-race and do things wrong. He was happy to be there and that’s a new string to his bow,” Berry said. “He got a little bit lost in the straight and wanted to wander around a bit and I had to stop and grab hold of him but then he got going again. He’s going to be a better horse in the autumn but geez, we’re going to have some fun in the spring.”
James McDonald was pleased with Wodeton’s first-up run despite suffering interference in the straight. “If he didn’t have a check he would have probably gone close,” he said. Beiwacht filled third after a tough run, with Adam Hyeronimus noting, “He’s got a good race in him this preparation.”
