The team at Ciaron Maher will draw on a reliable method to target success in a high-prize restricted contest at Caulfield.
Salty Pearl lines up in Saturday’s $500,000 VOBIS Platinum Guineas (1600m), hoping to surpass her recent Flemington placing.
She has thrived from a quick turnaround before, prevailing at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day last year after running fourth in Caulfield’s Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) the week before.
Blinkers are now part of Salty Pearl’s preparation for the Maher stable this Saturday.
Fourth start this campaign sees her with a third first-up at Caulfield in January, second to Sheza Alibi in last month’s Angus Armanasco Stakes (1400m) there, and third behind Sass Appeal in the Kewney Stakes at Flemington last week.
“We backed her up last prep and she was able to win at The Valley, and this looks a nice race for her, and we know that she can back up,” Maher said.
“We’ve got the blinkers up our sleeve which we’ll use on Saturday. We popped them on last campaign and she hit the mark.
“She came through that last run well and I think she’s still on the up.”
In 11 career outings, Salty Pearl has placed nine times, demonstrating steady reliability.
Besides the Thousand Guineas, she missed the placings only on her two-year-old debut in the Merson Cooper Stakes.
Elsewhere, Maher expects Milsons Point to rebound in the $1 million The Showdown (1200m).
Victorious on debut at Pakenham and runner-up in the Blue Diamond Preview at Caulfield, he struggled to a poor finish in the leading Melbourne juvenile feature last month.
“His two runs prior to the Blue Diamond Stakes were very good,” Maher said.
“The Blue Diamond didn’t go to plan, but he worked well earlier in the week and if work is anything to go by, he should run back to form and that should hold him in good stead for Saturday.”
