Caulfield Guineas Tips, Field Preview and Selections – 2020

Group 1 winning Sydney colts King’s Legacy and Ole Kirk have arrived in Melbourne to take on last season’s Blue Diamond Stakes winner Tagaloa in another greatly anticipated running of the 2020 Group 1 Caulfield Guineas at Caulfield on Saturday.

The $2 million purse has attracted a field of fifteen three year old colts and gelding to do battle over the 1600m at ‘The Heath’.

The Team Snowden trained King’s Legacy claims two Group 1 trophies at Randwick at the end of his two year old season while Ole Kirk, from the Team Hawkes stable, is coming a last start win in the Group 1 Golden Rose at Rosehill a fortnight ago.

The remainder of the field is headed up by the Peter Moody trained Glenfiddich who has proven his class with a third in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield and a win in the Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m) at The Valley.

Tagaloa

Tagaloa proved to be one of the top two year olds last season with his win in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes over 1200m at Caulfield in February.

Tagaloa is stepping up to the 1600m for the first time at his third run back this preparation, coming off a second up sixth in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke over 1400m at Caulfield on September 19. Might be tested at the trip.

King’s Legacy

King’s Legacy wrapped up his two year old season with two Group 1 wins at Randwick in the Inglis Sires’ (1400m) and in the Champagne Stakes (1600m) and is coming off a second third in the Group 1 Golden Rose over 1400m at Rosehill last start.

The step up to the 1600m at his third run back will be ideal for King’s Legacy who will strip as one of the main chances.

Ole Kirk

Ole Kirk chased home King’s Legacy at the end of the 2020 Sydney Autumn Carnival when fourth in the Inglis Sires’ and third in the Champagne Stakes but got the better of him last start in winning the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill.

The Team Hawkes trained Ole Kirk was strong at the end of the 1400m and will also appreciate stepping up to the 1600m and can figure in the finish again.

Mamaragan

Mamaragan showed glimpses of ability during his two year old season with a third in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill and a third in the Group 1 Inglis Sires’ (1400m) at Randwick during the 2020 Sydney Autumn Carnival,

Mamaragan has failed to threaten this preparation and was well beaten over the 1400m in the Golden Rose at Rosehill and will find this just as tough.

Glenfiddich

Scratched

Crosshaven

Crosshaven put himself into Caulfield Guineas contention with a last start win in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude over 1400m at Caulfield a fortnight ago.

The Lindsay Park trained three year old will find this a bit tougher and will need to get plenty of favours after drawing the outside gate in the 15-horse field.

Amish Boy

Anish Boy has been runner up at his two runs this campaign with a first up second in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) down the Flemington straight followed by a second in the Group 2 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) at Caulfield.

The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace trained colt is stepping up to the 1600m for the first time and will find this no easier.

Lunar Fox

Lunar Fox will wear the winkers for the first time in the Caulfield Guineas but a bit of fluffy lamb’s wool isn’t going to be enough for him to threaten here.

Lunar Fox is coming off a third up fourth behind Glenfiddich in the Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m) at The Valley a fortnight ago.

Mo’unga

Mo’unga took the step up to Listed level in his stride with a win in the Dulcify Stakes over 1500m at Rosehill and is on the rise again in the Caulfield Guineas.

The Savabeel colt will have no problem with the 1600m and has the potential to figure amongst the top division.

Aysar

Aysra has to find a lot of improvement to be competitive here coming off a last start sixth in the 1400m Caulfield Guineas Prelude at Caulfield a fortnight ago.

Cambourne

Cambourne wasn’t disgraced last start when fourth in the 1400m Caulfield Guineas Prelude at Caulfield but is facing a much tougher task here. Has the blinkers going on.

National Choice

National Choice was beaten less than two lengths when third in the 1400m Caulfield Guineas Prelude at Caulfield but still has a lot of improvement to be a threat here.

Grandslam

Grandslam looks well out of his class here following his latest second in a 1400m 3yo BenchMark 64 Handicap at Flemington.

Poland

Poland will be meeting much tougher opposition than he met last time out in winning a 1400m 3yo BenchMark 64 Handicap at Flemington.

Captain Corelli

Captain Corelli scored his Maiden win two starts back at Bendigo and then ran a respectable race when fifth in the 1400m Caulfield Guineas Prelude at Caulfield. Harder here.
