A decision on whether Agarwood lines up in Saturday’s $300,000 Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m) at Randwick will hinge on how she comes through her trackwork this week.
The daughter of Wootton Bassett, trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, was one of 20 entries but her trainers are considering alternative options after her sixth placing in the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes on a Heavy 10 surface.
Bott said the filly has the quality to measure up in Group company but is keen to see her next outing restore confidence. “She may also be nominated for a midweek race to get a bit of confidence back off the back of that,” Bott said. “The track was the big factor as to why she struggled the other day… she seems great and she has worked up nicely.”
One midweek option is a 1250m benchmark 72 for fillies and mares at Canterbury next Wednesday. Before the Silver Shadow, Agarwood had been unbeaten, winning her first two starts impressively at Warwick Farm and Randwick in May.
“It was difficult, she was beaten pretty quickly and convincingly the other day but she didn’t handle the track. It was very heavy, so you need to be forgiving of that,” Bott added. “She seems well and if she has a positive week we’ve got some good options.”
Tulloch Lodge has dual representation in the Furious, also nominating Woodlands Stakes winner Stardom, who tuned up with an all-the-way trial win at Hawkesbury on August 25. Meanwhile, Melbourne Cup hopes Vauban and Sir Delius are scheduled to resume in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m).
