Blue-blooded colt Central Coast Brisbane-bound after maiden win

Expensive colt Central Coast showed he could be on track for black-type success after a gritty win at Canterbury, navigating traffic and storming home to claim the Myplates Handicap (1250m) on Wednesday.

A $1.4 million yearling by Wootton Bassett out of champion mare Sunlight, the Coolmore-owned colt was held up early in the straight before jockey Adam Hyeronimus weaved a path and drove him past stablemate Crossbow ($19) to score by a neck. Kokatahi ($13) was third, giving trainer Chris Waller a trifecta result.

“There is a Listed 1400 metre race in ten days in Queensland,” said Waller’s assistant Charlie Duckworth. “He can either go there, or ultimately he will spell and start again for a big three-year-old year.”

Central Coast was a pick-up ride for Hyeronimus, replacing an ill Nash Rawiller. Despite pulling mid-race, the jockey praised the colt’s ability to quicken from a tight spot. “For him to accelerate the way he has is really good,” Hyeronimus said. “I’m sure that will mean something later in his career.”

Later on the card, Hyeronimus brought up a double aboard Kakadu Sunset ($10) in the Ranvet Handicap (1250m), denying Avenue Montaigne ($4.20) by a half-neck with Ernaux ($2.70 fav) in third.
