Big weekend coming up for Waller

Albert The Fat returns to Flemington on Saturday in a bid to win the Newmarket Handicap while his trainer Chris Waller will have three leading chances in Sydney’s first autumn Group One race, the Chipping Norton Stakes at Warwick Farm.

The winner of the BTC Cup when in the stable of Eden Petrie in Queensland, Albert The Fat was transferred to Waller in Sydney last spring.

At his fourth start for Waller, he stormed home to win the Group One Emirates Stakes (1600m) at Flemington in November by a short half head from King’s Rose.

“Albert The Fat will go into the Newmarket first-up and it will be a hard race but I’m hoping he runs well,” Waller said.

“He will have a jump-out down the straight at Flemington on Tuesday.

“After the Newmarket he will come back to Sydney for the George Ryder.”

His stablemate and winner of last year’s George Ryder Stakes, Rangirangdoo will be joined in the Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) by the Waller-trained Danleigh and Shoot Out.

Danleigh is also a George Ryder Stakes winner in 2010 and won last year’s Chipping Norton while another former Queenslander Shoot Out is having his third start for Waller after two lead-up minor placings in the Expressway and Apollo Stakes.

The injury-plagued Rangirangdoo threw a scare into the camp when he trailed in last of the nine Expressway runners before making some late ground in the Apollo with both races won by emerging sprint star Rain Affair.

Danleigh finished sixth in the Expressway and third in the Apollo with Waller hoping for a continuation of Sydney’s wet weather for the eight-year-old who has five wins from eight starts on slow tracks.

“A slow track would be perfect for Danleigh,” he said.

“A dead track would be ideal for all three.

“They have all done well. I think Rangirangdoo just lacked a bit of race fitness.”

“Jim Cassidy will ride Danleigh, Hugh Bowman sticks with Shoot Out and Peter Robl will ride Rangirangdoo.”

Nash Rawiller has been engaged for Albert The Fat in the Group One sprint at Flemington.

Waller has decided not to run Hawk Island in the Chipping Norton with the Metropolitan runner-up being aimed at longer races.

“Hawk Island will probably run in the 2000 metre race the following week,” he said.
