Another Sin set for San Domenico Stakes

Having cleared his first hurdle, Another Sin will step up to black-type company for his second start when he runs in the Group Three San Domenico Stakes.

The three-year-old was also nominated for Saturday’s Highway Handicap (1100m) at Rosehill, but trainer Brett Cavanough has again set his sights high.

Another Sin made his debut against older horses in a Highway Handicap at Rosehill on August 12, pulling off a concerted betting plunge in the process.

There were some anxious moments for punters who followed the money for the gelding who started favourite but had to survive a protest before getting the win by a short head.

“They only run the San Domenico once a year. Some are going in underdone, some are ready to go and some are fairly wound up,” Cavanough said.

He said the San Domenico had been in calculations for some time and it became a focus once Another Sin won his debut.

“Ability-wise it was just a matter of where I was going to tee off. If we lived up to what I thought (on debut) this is where we were going to be,” Cavanough said.

“This will give us a guide where we go next with him.”

Another Sin was listed as a $34 chance on the TAB’s opening fixed odds market for the 10-horse San Domenico (1100m).

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Blue Diamond Stakes runner-up Pariah headed betting at $2.90.

Cavanough was undeterred by the early odds, believing Another Sin was capable of stepping up in class with Josh Adams to ride, replacing Corey Brown who is committed to Golden Slipper placegetter Tulip.

“He’s got the fitness base. He’s very well and he drew a great gate (4),” Cavanough said.

If the jump to Group company proves insurmountable at this stage of his career, the Highway Handicaps and Magic Millions races are options.

“We can drop back and and if he wins the San Domenico or runs well we might just keep on pressing the button,” Cavanough said.

The Matt Dunn-trained Lifesaver, second to Another Sin at Rosehill, has opened the $2 favourite for the Highway race.
