In the news:

Well-bred debutant Mardi delivered a poignant win for the Cloros family at Canterbury on Wednesday.

The Redoute’s Choice filly overcame a wide draw to take out the Congrats @ Vinery Plate (1250m), a victory which carried much emotion for owner George Cloros following the death of his wife earlier this year.

Mardi is out of 2008 Newcastle Cup winner Bianca who also won that year’s Wyong Cup and finished second in the Metropolitan.

The diminutive Bianca was raced by the Cloros family and trained by Waterhouse who believes Mardi has inherited her dam’s ability, but thankfully not her frame.

“Bianca was only knee-high to a grasshopper but this filly is much bigger and scopier,” Waterhouse said.

“I think she can end up in black-type races.

“She’s a very special filly in the making.”

Mardi took up the running from her wide draw and maintained her advantage to score by three-quarters of a length over another well-bred first starter Ventura, a sister to Darley stallion Denman.

Pat Webster also found himself in the winner’s stall at Canterbury courtesy of Dee Dee Flyer but was quick to deflect praise to his son and stable foreman Wayne.

Wayne has recently rejoined the stable as foreman after walking away from his training partnership with his father earlier this year to pursue other interests.

Dee Dee Flyer led to claim the Big Sports Breakfast Plate (1250m) by almost three lengths, a win which came almost a year after he broke down at his first start at Warwick Farm.

“I’ll take the money but I won’t take the credit,” Pat Webster said.

“This horse wouldn’t be anything if it wasn’t for my son Wayne.

“He has spent so much time on his legs.”

Meanwhile, apprentice Sam Clipperton was suspended for five meetings for careless riding aboard Mr Scary in the third race.

He will start the ban straight away and can return to the saddle on Villiers Stakes day.

Clipperton’s boss, Ron Quinton, will start Monton in the Villiers and confirmed Clipperton is in the mix for the ride.
