Fraser not phased as PGA underdog

Bookies have given Australian golfer Marcus Fraser next to no chance at success in his first US PGA Championship but the man himself is happy to prove them wrong.

With odds of 301-1 being touted for the two-time European Tour winner and world No.82, those with intimate knowledge of the New South Welshman just might be getting on.

The 34-year-old is after all in the midst of an impressive European Tour season with four top six finishes, helping him to 23rd on their money list. And while it’s his first time in this major, he has played three Open Championships and a US Open.

“I have a set of golf clubs here and two arms and two legs so I’ve got some sort of chance,” Fraser said tongue-in-cheek.

But he was serious about his chances.

“There is no point turning up unless you think you can contend come Sunday afternoon so hopefully I can do all the right things with my game and be in with a chance at some point Sunday,” he said.

“This is my first PGA Championship and these are the events you want to play in so I’m looking forward to playing my best.

“I have moved into the top 85 in the world, the best I’ve ever been, and everything is going in the right direction.”

Fraser arrived in the US a week early to get in some practise but also to get to Disney World with his young son.

“I’m feeling good and refreshed after that,” he said.

“Coming in early helped me get used to the heat and having a bit of a break and good experience with the family is always nice.”

With thunderstorms and rain delays expected throughout the week at the Ocean Course on Kiawah Island, Fraser becomes even more confident.

“I would prefer it to be a little windy so it feels a bit more like Europe,” he said.

“The course is awesome, so I’m looking forward to it.”
