Aussie golfers to make youth games debut

Two 14-year-old girls will be among Australia’s golf representatives as the sport makes its debut at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF) in Sydney in January.

Golf and rugby sevens are both on the program of the 30-nation event for the first time, ahead of their introduction for the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016.

Australia has entered two golf teams – each made up of two boys and two girls – for what is the sixth staging of the AYOF.

While it is an under-18 event, Australia’s contingent are mostly considerably younger and none of them is among Australia’s top-10 ranked boy or girl golfers.

That’s partly to give experience to up-and-coming players.

It’s also because a selection of the top-ranked juniors is committed to competing in the Australian Amateur championships, which are on at the same time.

One of Australia’s AYOF team members is Sydney’s Celina Yuan, who is 13 but will be 14 in January, along with her 17-year-old brother Kevin, Queensland’s Amy Walsh and Victoria’s Brett Coletta.

The other team is Queensland’s Rebecca Kay, also turning 14 in January, and Victorians Bianca Ling, Frazer Droop and David Micheluzzi.

There are individual boys’ and girls’ medals, as well as for the team competition, in which the four team members’ scores are added together.

They will play at the Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club from January 17-20.
