Young NZ cricketers learning: Mills

Stand-in Black Caps captain Kyle Mills says his young team will learn from the latest one-day loss to Bangladesh at Fatullah near Dhaka.

The Black Caps stumbled to their seventh straight limited overs defeat by Bangladesh in losing the third ODI by four wickets at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali stadium.

The three losses continue a losing streak which began in 2010 with a 4-0 ODI series loss in Bangladesh.

The New Zealanders set a competitive total in reaching 5-307 after losing the toss, boosted by a well-paced century from former captain Ross Taylor.

But Bangladesh paced their innings to ease home with four balls and four wickets to spare, Shamsur Rahman setting up the win in hitting seven fours and four sixes in his 107-ball 96.

Mills, captaining the New Zealanders in the absence of injured skipper Brendon McCullum, says the team are steadily gaining experience.

“All players have to start somewhere and, even though we’ve lost these games, the guys are going to learn from it,” he said.

“That’s the most important thing about losing games. There are positives and the guys will be better cricketers from these experiences.”

Mills said Taylor’s eighth one-day century was a particular highlight, and there were other positives to be taken from the three-match series loss.

Taylor was unbeaten on 107 after joining opener Tom Latham at the crease midway through the 17th over with the total at 2-82. His 107 came off 93 balls, and included nine fours and three sixes.

“Ross Taylor’s innings was classy; he crafted it beautifully. Anton Devcich and Tom Latham played their hands and I thought Colin Munro got an opportunity today and he really grasped it. He played a magnificent knock.”

Devcich (46) and Latham (43) gave the Black Caps a good start, while Munro, playing his first match in the series, belted seven fours and two sixes in his 77-ball innings before he fell for 85.

Mills said Jimmy Neesham and Corey Anderson had also played well throughout the series.

“Young guys standing up is a great sign for New Zealand cricket,” he said.

“There are positives, and we’re going to take those moving forward into Sri Lanka and our home summer.”

The Black Caps complete their Bangladesh tour with a Twenty20 international in Dhaka on Wednesday before travelling to Sri Lanka for three ODIs and two T20 matches.

The West Indies and India both have tours of New Zealand scheduled this summer.
