White steps down as Stars’ T20 captain

Former Australia Twenty20 skipper Cameron White has re-signed with Melbourne Stars for next summer’s Big Bash League (BBL) season but has stepped down as captain.

Leg-spin great Shane Warne, who played with the Stars last season but is yet to commit to a new deal, is expected to be named as captain.

Stars president Eddie McGuire announced at a media conference on Tuesday that national T20 squad members White and David Hussey had re-signed with the MCG-based team.

Rob Quiney, Matthew Wade, Peter Handscomb and English import Luke Wright will also return for a second season.

The Stars have recruited former Australia captain Ian Chappell as chairman of selectors.

McGuire said the discussion about Warne was for another day and he wanted to focus on Tuesday’s re-signing of six key batsmen.

The Stars have already announced they’ve recruited batsmen Brad Hodge and Glenn Maxwell from the Melbourne Renegades.

Wade’s national duties mean Handscomb is likely to keep wicket for the Stars at times during the December-January season.

White, Quiney, Wright and Hussey, who was named player of the BBL last summer, have all signed three-year deals.

“Cameron has stood down as captain of the Melbourne Stars and it was Cameron’s decision to do so to concentrate on playing and to concentrate on getting back into that Australian side,” McGuire said.

“The announcement that he’s been picked during the week justifies … the decision.

“There’s no decision yet (on the captaincy) because we’re still going through our signings.

“Shane Warne’s name comes up. `Warnie’ hasn’t been contracted yet.

“Ian (Chappell) will be making those decisions and putting it through the board as the chairman of selectors.

“With the 14-man deadline coming up (on Friday), we just want to make sure we’ve got the basis of a fantastic team to go out and win the premiership.”

In other BBL signing news, Perth have captured South African paceman Albie Morkel with Tom Triffitt and Adam Voges also confirmed for the Scorchers.

Adelaide’s recruitment has continued with the capture of spinners Nathan Lyon and Jon Holland, Brisbane have re-signed young batsmen Joe Burns and Chris Lynn and national team spinner Xavier Doherty will join Jonathan Wells at the Hobart Hurricanes.

The Sydney Thunder also made a player announcement, snaring Tasmanian-based pair Mark Cosgrove and Rhett Lockyear.
