Western Australia will unleash their version of a Jo Angel bowling clone when Simon Mackin makes his Sheffield Shield debut against Tasmania in Hobart, starting Sunday.
Mackin and all-rounder Ashton Turner are set to become the latest Shield debutants under Justin Langer, who has introduced a host of youth since taking over as coach last year.
Star all-rounder Nathan Coulter-Nile has been rested after being placed on standby for the third Ashes Test against England in Perth, while in-form opener Marcus North is on personal leave following the death of his brother last week.
John Rogers was dropped following a string of low scores.
Mackin, 21, snared 2-32 and 1-3 against an England Chairman’s XI in Alice Springs last week, and Langer likes the look of the 202cm right-arm paceman.
“Simon Mackin reminds me of a young Jo Angel, who’s our highest ever wicket-taker,” Langer said.
“He’s six-foot eight and puts it in great areas.
“He’s a brilliant kid. I can’t wait to see him do well.”
Angel is a WA legend after taking 419 Shield wickets for the Warriors, as well as playing four Tests and three one-dayers for Australia.
Turner’s path towards his Shield debut has been an unusual one.
The 20-year-old made his first-class debut for Australia in a tour match against Sussex earlier this year, and played against England last month while representing a WA Chairman’s XI side.
“He got 170 in club cricket a few weeks ago and got 60 against England at the WACA,” Langer said.
“He’s earned the right to play with his batting but he gives us an off-spin option with Marcus North unavailable.”
Left-arm paceman Ryan Duffield has earned a recall after snaring 8-49 in club ranks.
Langer said there was no time frame on North’s return.
WA squad: Adam Voges (capt), Ashton Agar, Cameron Bancroft, Jason Behrendorff, Ryan Duffield, Michael Hogan, Simon Mackin, Mitch Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Luke Towers, Ashton Turner, Sam Whiteman (12th man to be named).
