Warne unsure when he will finally retire

Leg-spin legend Shane Warne admits he cannot say when he will finally retire from playing cricket.

The 43-year-old returned to domestic competition last year, playing for the Melbourne Stars in the inaugural Big Bash League (BBL) and this summer he will captain them.

Warne, one of the best players in the game’s history, said every time he thinks he is done with playing, another competition has caught his interest.

“I have to `never say never’, because in 2007 I said I’d never play cricket again,” he said.

“I think I’ve retired nine times.

“But 18 months later the IPL came up, so that was something that interested me, to captain coach and do it the way I always thought it should be done.

“It’s the way it all panned out.

“I do love cricket, I’m passionate about the game and if I can help Australian cricket in any way, shape or form then I will.”

Warne added Stars president Eddie McGuire had convinced him to play a greater role in the team this season.

“I always felt like I played better when I was captain, so hopefully I can do better this year,” Warne said.

“There was a little bit of arm-twisting and things like that … Eddie can be persuasive.”

Warne returned to training on Tuesday ahead of the BBL and welcomed the news that West Indian Marlon Samuels will play for cross-town rivals the Melbourne Renegades.

The spin king said the more internationals playing in the BBL, the better.

“Having someone from the West Indies who just won the (world) Twenty20 – they must have been doing something right – I’m sure the Renegades people will learn a lot off Marlon Samuels,” Warne said.

“He’s a bloody good player, too.”

Warne is particularly keen to help more Victorian players make national teams, repeating the common refrain from his home state that they are under-represented.

“Generally, the most successful teams, that’s where the players get selected from,” he said.

“Victoria have been the most successful team for a while now, so it’s surprising we don’t see more Victorians in the Test team, for sure.”
