Wade failure opens the door for Haddin

Matthew Wade’s first failure in Australian colours has left the door slightly ajar for out-of-favour wicketkeeper Brad Haddin to convince selectors he deserves a one-day recall as early as Sunday.

Wade, who posted scores of 72, 32 and 67 in his first three bats for Australia, was dismissed for just one in Friday’s one-day clash with Sri Lanka at the WACA.

Australia’s batsmen struggled on a day when the mercury almost reached 40C in Perth, with Michael Clarke’s 57 the only notable score as the hosts were dismissed for 231 in 49.1 overs.

Haddin will return to Sydney club ranks on Saturday in the hope a big score will convince national selectors to recall him for Sunday’s encounter against India in Adelaide.

But even if that big score eventuates, the 34-year-old is by no means guaranteed a swift recall.

Selectors are unlikely to discard Wade after just one failure, meaning Haddin may have to wait until later in the series.

Coach Mickey Arthur is adamant Haddin remains a vital member of Australia’s squad.

But with the March-April tour of the West Indies fast approaching, Arthur hinted Haddin faced a stern task to maintain his status as the country’s No.1 keeper.

“It’s likely we’ll take two keepers to the West Indies anyway, so it will be a nice little internal battle going on and I look forward to seeing who comes out trumps on that,” Arthur said.

“(Wade’s) a terrier, he’s a fighter, he’s got a lot about him.

“He’s got a good technique when he bats and he’s very good behind the stumps.

“It’s great that we’ve got so much competition in every place in the Australian cricket team at the moment. Nobody is guaranteed a spot.”

Haddin isn’t the only one returning to his club roots this weekend, with injury-plagued all-rounder Shane Watson also set to return on Saturday.

Watson will play for Sutherland against Haddin’s Easts at Waverley Oval.

Batsman Peter Forrest missed out on selection for Australia on Friday, but remains a chance to make his debut on Sunday.
