WA lose quick wickets chasing win

Alister McDermott, son of former Test fast bowler Craig, showed glimpses of his old man but Western Australia were still poised to claim victory in their Sheffield Shield clash with Queensland at the Gabba.

Chasing 68 for victory, WA were 3-23 at lunch on the final day after McDermott (3-12) ripped through the top order.

Already boasting an action similar to his father’s, McDermott provided a fiery spell to ensure WA did not have it all their way chasing the paltry total.

McDermott struck with the fifth ball of WA’s second innings, snaring Liam Davis (4) caught behind.

In his next over McDermott snared Wes Robinson (4) when stand-in Queensland skipper Chris Hartley took a sharp leg-side catch.

And lunch was called when McDermott trapped WA captain Marcus North (5) in front.

Dumped Australian batsman Shaun Marsh was not out 10.

Second-placed WA still looked set to reduce Queensland’s ladder lead to just four points with two rounds left after the Bulls failed to roar on Thursday.

After resuming at 4-111, Queensland at one stage lost 4-11 to be bundled out for 175 in their second dig.

Ex-Test spinner Michael Beer (3-19) was the main destroyer.

He sparked the collapse by dismissing Hartley (21) and Cameron Boyce (0) in three balls to reduce the hosts to 8-164.

Hartley was hardly impressed when given out caught at bat-pad, standing his ground before trudging off as WA celebrated.

Beer completed the rout when he trapped Luke Feldman in front with a quicker delivery as Queensland overall lost 6-49 on Thursday.

Top scorer for Queensland was Joe Burns (43) but Michael Neser received the loudest round of applause.

The allrounder suffered an ankle sprain in the field on Wednesday but still opted to bat on Thursday – a job made harder with runners now unavailable.

He hobbled to nine runs before being bowled by ex-Bulls quick Nathan Rimmington (3-28).
