WA all out for 359 v Qld in Shield

Returning Queensland quick Ben Cutting provided national selectors food for thought as Western Australia crashed to be all out for 359 in their Sheffield Shield clash at the Gabba on Wednesday.

In his first Shield game back since a side strain shattered his Test chances in December, Cutting took 5-99 as WA at one stage lost 5-55 to be bundled out by lunch on day three.

WA gained first innings points after eclipsing Queensland’s 251 but would be disappointed with only holding a 108-run overall lead after sitting pretty at 2-234 late on Tuesday.

Resuming at 0-56 on Wednesday, Cutting took 5-43 with leg-spinner Cameron Boyce (1-54) completing the rout.

Cutting had been hoping to revive hopes of an Australian call-up after being struck down with injury following 12th man duties in the first Test against New Zealand in Brisbane.

Before the Gabba Test in December, Cutting was the season’s standout Shield quick but was left holding the drinks against the Kiwis by the then-little known James Pattinson and Mitchell Starc.

However, Cutting will be backing himself to again make national selectors sit up and take notice after his fiery spell – and an up and down deck – sparked the WA collapse.

After resuming on day three at 4-250, WA stumbled as Cutting quickly grabbed his fifth first class five-wicket haul.
