Victoria 7-344 against SA in Shield

Victorian opener Rob Quiney extended his run feast but the famine continued for Cameron White against South Australia in the Sheffield Shield match in Adelaide.

Quiney and 20-year-old Peter Handscomb made centuries but White fell for just three as the Bushrangers posted 7-344 on Thursday’s opening day at Adelaide Oval.

Quiney belted 114, pushing his summer spree past 1000 runs in all three formats.

The aggressive left-hander combined with Handscomb (113) in a 225-run partnership, capitalising on sloppy fielding by SA, who dropped four catches.

Recalled Redback James Smith turfed two catches, while debutant Travis Head and wicketkeeper Adam Crosthwaite also muffed chances.

Handscomb, who opted for cricket over tennis despite being a seeded player in junior tournaments featuring Bernard Tomic, was the major beneficiary.

The elegant right-hander was dropped on 11 and 15 en route to his maiden first-class ton.

Quiney was also dropped on 76 as the lowly Redbacks floundered, before paceman Peter George (3-59) was instrumental in a fightback.

George struck as the Bushrangers, from the comfort of 1-226, lost 5-60.

The collapse was unheralded after the fine partnership between Handscomb and Quiney, who took his overall tally to 1096 runs this season.

Quiney moved to second on the Shield run-scorer’s list – he’s also third highest scorer in the one-day competition, and only five batsmen scored more in the Big Bash League.

Quiney and Handscomb were particularly savage on legspinner Cameron Williams, also on debut for the Redbacks.

Williams sent down a series of waist-high full tosses in his initial six wicketless overs which cost 50 runs.

But Quiney’s dismissal was the first in Victoria’s slump which included captain White lasting just a dozen balls.

White, who was dumped as Australia’s Twenty20 captain after managing just 55 runs at an average of 7.86 in the BBL, was caught at first slip from a half-hearted push outside off stump.
