The Test audition for NSW trio Steve Smith, Moises Henriques and Stephen O’Keefe will have to wait, with openers Scott Henry and David Dawson doing their best to eat up Western Australia’s first innings total of 232 on day two of their Sheffield Shield clash.
The pair put on 68 for the first wicket before Henry was bowled just before lunch for 39 by debutant left-arm spinner Ashton Agar (1-4), as the Blues reached lunch 1-72.
Dawson remains 26 not out, with Peter Nevill (4no) joining him at the crease just before the break.
NSW, chasing maximum points against the last-placed Warriors to strengthen their chances of reaching the Shield final, are 171 runs short of first innings points at Blacktown International Sportspark.
Smith is expected to come in next knowing a big score would be very timely with selectors due to announce the squad for next month’s four-Test tour of India within a week.
Henriques and O’Keefe are also considered chances to claim the allrounder and back-up spinning roles respectively.
O’Keefe ended the Warriors’ first innings after just 15 minutes of play on Friday, trapping Jason Behrendorff for a duck to finish with figures of 4-55.
On Thursday, John Rogers (45) and Sam Whiteman (41) helped lift the bottom-placed Warriors past 200 after O’Keefe had a big hand in restricting their top order to another disappointing start.
