Tasmania 1-57 in reply to SA’s 126

Test opener Ed Cowan fell cheaply as Tasmania replied to South Australia’s paltry 126 all out in the Sheffield Shield match in Adelaide.

The Tigers were 1-57 at tea on the second day, with Cowan out for 11 and his opening partner Mark Cosgrove (13) retiring hurt.

Alex Doolan was unbeaten on 14 at tea, with Ricky Ponting not out 17.

After the opening day was washed out, SA’s batsmen lasted less than 50 overs on Thursday after winning the toss.

The Redbacks lost their last seven wickets for 15 runs, with Tasmanian pacemen Jackson Bird and James Faulkner each taking four wickets.

SA opener Tom Stray (51) posted his maiden first-class half-century but no other batsman passed 25 – the last eight in the batting order failed to reach double figures.

Tasmania’s reply began soundly until Cowan was bowled by Joe Mennie with the score on 25.

Cosgrove was then struck on the left hand by a Gary Putland bouncer, and the left-hander tried to bat on but retired hurt in the next over.
