Silk fights back in India’s tour game

Tasmania batsman Jordan Silk curbed India’s momentum during the first session of their hastily organised tour game at Adelaide’s Glenelg Oval.

The Cricket Australia XI were 3-101 at lunch on Thursday, Silk unbeaten on 55 after helping his side recover from 3-34.

There was no toss, with the tourists granted their wish of bowling first in the two-day fixture.

It means Virat Kohli, Murali Vijay and Rohit Sharma, who all attended Phillip Hughes’ funeral in Macksville on Wednesday, will be able to bat later in the match.

Mohammed Shami struck twice with the new ball, removing Ryan Carters and Matthew Short in his six-over spell that cost 20 runs.

Express paceman Varun Aaron claimed the other wicket to fall, when Ashton Turner played on in the second over.

Carters and NSW left-armer Josh Lalor both landed in Adelaide on Thursday morning, having flown from Coffs Harbour to Sydney on Wednesday night following Hughes’ service.

Officials and players lined up for a minute’s silence before play, while both sides were wearing black armbands in memory of Hughes.

Silk was notably aggressive against legspinner Karn Sharma, crashing three fours and a six.

India’s second tour game at Adelaide Oval last week was cancelled following the shock death of Hughes.

CA wanted to give the visitors a replacement match before the rescheduled four-Test series starts in Adelaide on Tuesday.

“We have a responsibility to provide international teams with adequate preparation ahead of international series and we feel that this two-day tour match will prove sufficient,” CA team performance general manager Pat Howard said.
