SA’s Hughes hits on but Vics on top

Another Phil Hughes century couldn’t prevent Victoria putting a stranglehold on South Australia on Friday’s second day of the Sheffield Shield match in Adelaide.

Hughes made 120 as the Redbacks battled to 8-239 at stumps in reply to Victoria’s 319 all out.

Victoria’s Test paceman James Pattinson took 2-36 from 12 overs in four spells in his return to top-line cricket after a two-month absence with a side injury.

Pattinson, seeking to prove his fitness for Australia’s tour of India next month, was rusty early but improved considerably the more he bowled.

His fellow quicks Will Sheridan (3-44) and John Hastings (2-35) were also successful.

Hughes was the mainstay of the SA innings as he continued his stunning scoring spree which has returned 1515 runs at an average of 58.89 in all competitions this summer for SA, the Adelaide Strikers and Australia.

But the left-hander received scant support from his teammates – no other batsman in SA’s top seven passed 21, yet all reached double figures.

Strokeplayer Callum Ferguson, the Shield’s second-highest run-scorer behind Hughes, made just 13 and failed to press his claims for inclusion on Australia’s tour of India next month.
