Pattinson returns for Vics against SA

Victorian paceman James Pattinson made a lively return from injury against South Australia on Friday’s second day of the Sheffield Shield match in Adelaide.

In reply to Victoria’s 319 all out, SA reached 2-40 at lunch with Phil Hughes not out 11 and Callum Ferguson on one.

Australian quick Pattinson hadn’t played since suffering a rib injury on November 24 against South Africa in the second Test in Adelaide.

The 22-year-old on Friday delivered four speedy overs, returning 0-13, in his initial spell against the Redbacks as he eyes a recall to the Test squad for next month’s tour of India.

Pattinson took the new ball after Victoria’s batsmen collapsed, losing their final seven wickets for a meagre 40 runs against a South Australian side inspired by swing bowler Chadd Sayers.

Sayers became the leading wicket taker in this season’s Shield competition, claiming 6-49 from 23 overs.

The 25-year-old’s best first-class figures took his personal season tally to 28 Shield wickets at an average of 20.35, one more victim than Tasmanian fast bowler Jackson Bird.

But SA lost their opening batsmen Sam Raphael (12) and Michael Klinger (16) before lunch with John Hastings dismissing both.
