Lee keen to play on despite broken foot

Veteran Australian pace bowler Brett Lee says his foot injury is causing him a lot of pain and scans have shown it is still broken.

But Lee said on Thursday he was determined to play on with Australia to host game one of the one-day international (ODI) tri-series finals in Brisbane on Sunday.

The 35-year-old limited-overs specialist says he’s unsure if he will be rested for Friday’s MCG clash with Sri Lanka which will determine if Sri Lanka or India reach the finals.

Fit-again quick James Pattinson is a chance to return to the side on Friday after overcoming last month’s foot injury which caused an early end to his Test campaign against India.

Australia (19 points from seven matches) lead India (15 from eight) and Sri Lanka (15 from seven) with one game remaining before the best-of-three finals series.

“This series is certainly alive now so that should be a lot of fun,” said Lee, who has claimed five wickets at 36.00 in four matches in the series.

“Hopefully I’ve been doing my job and playing some decent cricket.

“I’m just really focused on what I’m doing, trying to lead the attack.

“We have got a great squad of players and some serious depth so we’ll wait and see what happens tomorrow night.

“It (toe) is still broken. I had an x-ray yesterday.

“The show must go on. You’ve got to do these things when you’re playing for your country.

“It has been very painful. I’ve come back a lot earlier than I probably should have, but you have to do that when you’re playing for your country.”

Skipper Michael Clarke is in doubt for Friday’s game with a back/hamstring problem.

Lee injured his foot while fielding off his own bowling in a Twenty20 International against India in Melbourne on February 3.

The injury was expected to require at least a month on the sidelines but Lee returned to action in an ODI against Sri Lanka in Sydney two weeks later.
