Haddin knows where he stands: Ponting

Brad Haddin’s own comments on his omission from Australia’s one-day side show he knows where he stands with national selectors, according to Ricky Ponting.

Haddin, originally omitted from Australia’s first three one-day matches this summer in what selectors said at the time was a rest, was again left out when a 14-man squad was named earlier this week for Friday and Sunday’s games.

The 34-year-old responded to his original axing on a Sydney radio station last month by claiming “any time you’re out of the Australian cricket team I think you’re dropped”.

And his second omission, which came without a public explanation, appeared to back up his claims he’d been dropped.

The situation prompted allrounder Shane Watson to call on selectors to make it clear to Haddin what his status is but Ponting says those original comments by Haddin show he knows where he stands and that no explanation is necessary.

“I think Brad’s been spot on the mark with everything he’s had to say,” Ponting told reporters on Thursday.

“It’s been made pretty clear now that what Brad’s had to say at the start of the one-day series looks like it’s the way it is. He’s been unmoved in his stance on his situation.”

Ponting said he was hopeful talk about Haddin’s position could now quieten down and the wicketkeeper be allowed to focus on his on-field performance – starting with NSW’s Sheffield Shield clash with Western Australia starting on Friday in Perth.

“He’s got a week where hopefully he’s not answering those questions anymore and he can get a really good Sheffield Shield game under his belt, score some runs, take some catches, and come out of this week a lot happier guy than he is at the moment,” Ponting said.

“I think it’s all pretty clear as far as he’s concerned.”
