David Warner hits an unbeaten 75

David Warner’s fighting spirit sparked Australia’s comeback on day two of the first cricket Test against Pakistan.

After bowling Pakistan out for 454 in their first innings on a Dubai pitch starting to favour spin, Australia reached 0-113 off 31 overs at stumps on Thursday with Warner unbeaten on 75.

Warner had struck seven boundaries and one six off 77 deliveries while Chris Rogers played a supporting hand, scoring 31 off 110 balls.

Warner had a close escape on 10 when an lbw appeal from offspinner Mohammad Hafeez was turned down and Pakistan didn’t call for a video review.

Left-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babar almost struck in his first over when Rogers, on 13, edged to slip where Younis Khan dropped the chance.

Warner reached his half-century off 50 deliveries with a reverse sweep off the bowling of legspinner Yasir Shah.

It’s the sixth consecutive Test innings in which the left-hander has reached 50 and Warner also notched his fifth century stand with Rogers in 21 innings together.

The 27-year-old Warner’s inspirational knock has come in his first Test match since becoming a father to daughter Ivy Mae in September.

Australia finally bowled Pakistan out for 454, two balls after tea on day two.

No.7 batsman Sarfraz Ahmed’s 109 off 105 balls ended any hopes Australia had of keeping the host team to a total around the 350-mark.

Sarfraz was out in the last over before tea after hitting 14 fours in his second hundred in successive Tests.

Left-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babar, facing the bowling of Mitchell Johnson, was struck on the middle finger of his right hand and retired hurt for seven.

The final wicket fell two balls after the tea break to offspinner Nathan Lyon who claimed 2-148 off 37 overs, while left-arm spinner Steve O’Keefe (2-107) took two wickets on debut.

Left-arm quick Johnson continued his economical style from day one and finished with 3-39 from 31 overs.

Sarfraz joined Younis (106) as century-makers in Pakistan’s first innings, while Asad Shafiq made 89.

Pakistan had resumed on their overnight score of 4-219.
