Tasmanian paceman Jackson Bird has taken five wickets to help skittle ladder leaders Western Australia for 142 on day one of the Sheffield Shield match at Bellerive.
Bird finished with figures of 5-32 to grab his fourth five-wicket haul of the summer.
He’d dismissed openers Liam Davis and Wes Robinson (both nine) in one over in the morning session before removing Luke Ronchi (one), Jason Behrendorff (four) and Adam Voges (49) before tea.
The Warriors were sent in on a green-top by Tigers captain Ricky Ponting and only captain Voges, Test discard Shaun Marsh (34) and tailender Nathan Coulter-Nile (26) were able to reach double figures.
WA found themselves in trouble early at 2-20 before Marsh and Voges put on 52 for the third wicket but the team then lost 4-5 to be 6-77 soon after lunch.
Voges and Coulter-Nile put on 45 for the seventh wicket but when the paceman spooned a Ben Laughlin delivery to substitute Sam Rainbird it was 7-122.
Voges, who had lives on 35 and 42, didn’t like the decision that had him out one short of his half century, a ball from Bird appearing to hit his arm on the way to Ed Cowan at second slip for 9-139.
Tasmania needed to overcome the loss of three players as a result of suspected salmonella poisoning they say may have been picked up during their recent trip to Adelaide.
The Tigers lost batsman Alex Doolan and allrounders Matt Johnston and Jeremy Smith with the stomach bug picked up by six or seven of the squad in Adelaide.
Jon Wells, Ben Laughlin and Sam Rainbird were drafted into the squad.
The situation has resulted in health inspections at Adelaide Oval.
“The kitchen and players’ dining facilities at Adelaide Oval were inspected by authorities from SA Health this morning and we have been advised that at this time no further action is required,” SACA chief executive Keith Bradshaw said in a statement.
