Australia declared their first innings closed at 7-604 shortly after tea on day two of the fourth Test against India at Adelaide Oval on Wednesday.
Ricky Ponting made 221 and skipper Michael Clarke hit 210.
Their 386-run partnership is the fourth-highest by an Australian pair for any wicket in Tests.
It’s also a record for any wicket for Australia against India.
It was two runs shy of the Australian fourth-wicket record of 388 set by Don Bradman and Bill Ponsford against England in 1934.
Clarke, who scored a career-best 329 not out in the Sydney Test earlier this month, was bowled by Umesh Yadav in the first over after lunch on Wednesday.
Australia advanced from 3-335 to 3-469 at lunch on a lifeless pitch but then lost four wickets in the post-lunch session.
Clarke is only the third player in Test history to score a double hundred and a triple century in the same series.
The skipper hit 26 fours and one six from 275 deliveries in a grand performance, offering a chance at second slip on 133.
Mike Hussey (25) was run out by Gautam Gambhir at short leg and Ponting holed out to deep square leg 10 runs later at 6-530 off the bowling of Zaheer Khan (2-96).
Peter Siddle (two) was caught behind as spinner Ravi Ashwin (3-194 off 53 overs) claimed his third victim.
Ryan Harris was 35 not out and wicketkeeper Brad Haddin was unbeaten on 42.
The declaration came seven overs after tea as Harris hit a pull shot for six to lift the home side’s tally over the 600-mark.
Ponting is averaging 96.80 in the series after scoring his sixth career double-hundred.
The 37-year-old hit 21 boundaries from 404 deliveries and was dropped at mid-wicket on 215 after Ishant Sharma missed a return catch when the batsman was on 186.
Another 21 overs remain in the day’s play.
