Forget the current AFL issue of head-high tackles – training can be even more hazardous for Richmond players.
As the Tigers warmed up on Tuesday morning at Punt Rd, a small group of players were called to lie down on the oval in a row, their feet facing the main group.
Team-mates then took great delight in lobbing high kicks at the unfortunate targets, who were not allowed to move.
“It works off a little handball game we did before and whoever finished last out of the eight groups that we do it in gets to lie down and face the unfortunate punishment,” said Tigers star Jack Riewoldt.
“It’s just something to break up the monotony of training.
“The boys enjoy it and no-one got hurt, which was good.”
A safer drill is the standard competition where players try to kick balls into the wheelie bins that carry the club equipment.
Riewoldt said Trent Cotchin achieved the rare feat last week, earning $5 from each team-mate.
“No-one’s paid him yet,” Riewoldt said, grinning.
